How to add a signature to a PDF

There are three ways to add your signature to a PDF: draw it, type it, or upload an image. Each method produces a legally binding electronic signature when done through a proper e-signature platform.

Method 1: Draw your signature

Open the document in SignOwl, click the signature field, and draw your signature with your mouse or finger (on mobile). This gives the most personal, handwritten look.

Method 2: Type your name

Click the signature field and type your name. Choose from several signature-style fonts. This is the fastest method and looks consistently professional.

Method 3: Upload a signature image

If you have a photo or scan of your handwritten signature, upload the image. The background is automatically removed and your signature is placed cleanly on the document.

Self-signing vs sending for others

If you need to sign a document yourself, upload it, add your signature, and download. If someone else needs to sign, place the signature fields, enter their email, and send — they'll get a link to sign without needing an account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add multiple signatures to one PDF?

Yes. Place multiple signature fields on your document — each can be assigned to a different signer or used for initials on different pages.

Is adding a signature to a PDF legally binding?

Yes, when done through an e-signature platform with audit trail capabilities. Simply pasting an image into a PDF editor does not create a legally binding signature because there's no audit trail.
