What is an audit trail in e-signatures?
An audit trail is a detailed log of every action taken during the signing process. It's what makes an electronic signature enforceable in court — the proof that the right person signed at the right time.
What's in an audit trail
A complete audit trail includes: timestamp of every action (document created, viewed, signed), signer's IP address, browser and operating system, document hash (SHA-256) to detect tampering, and the sequence of events from creation to completion.
Why it matters legally
In a dispute, the audit trail proves three things: who signed (identity), when they signed (timestamp), and that the document hasn't been changed since signing (integrity). Without these, an e-signature may not hold up in court.
How SignOwl creates audit trails
Every document signed through SignOwl generates a certificate of completion attached to the PDF. It includes all audit trail data in a human-readable format and a machine-verifiable document hash. Anyone can verify the document at signowl.app/verify.
Frequently asked questions
Is an audit trail required for legally binding e-signatures?
Strictly speaking, ESIGN Act doesn't require an audit trail. But without one, proving the signature's authenticity in court becomes much harder. Every reputable e-signature platform includes audit trails as standard.
Can I access the audit trail for my signed documents?
Yes. SignOwl attaches the audit trail directly to the signed PDF. You can also verify any document's integrity using the verification page.
